Can you read this? This?

I had a hard time finding a 5 inch floppy disk for a gag gift last week. And I sure don't have a computer can read it? Of course the pocketmod will be legible for quite a bit longer. Now will anyone want to read it in ten years? Fifty? Nine hundred? Well, no. But there's a good chance somebody could were they to stumble across it.

Triconderoga.

The big black triangular pencil writes fine. I could see using it but it has too many challenges to be used as my pocketmod pencil. It's just too darn big. I can't use my pocket clip on it and I have to have a certain sharpener for it. But it is sitting in a place of honour; the pencil trough on my keyboard at work.

Dixon Tri-Conderoga

Once again it is time for a new pencil. I wanted to try something different than my usual Palomino and was given this Tri-Conderoga by my daughter. It looks promising with an easy to grip triangular cross section and and easy to grip rubbery surface. And it is very distinctive looking with it's black finish and gold markings. I can't wait to see how it writes.

This entry was going to feature a writing comparison between the new Tri-Conderoga and the Palomino but, darn it, the Tri-Conderoga won't fit in my usual sharpener. I even tried an electric Boston sharpener. No go. I'll just have to wait to see if any of the sharpeners at home will work.

Guest cover this week. From the doodle party.

Sophie had a doodle themed birthday party last week. We created blank pocketmods with custom covers by Sophie which were put in the guest's loot bags along with thumbprint doodle kits. The kids spent a few hours at the Creative Kids Museum where fun and screaming ensued.

Solar. Atomic.

My first G-Shock. G-Shock toughness. Solar powered. Picks up signals from the US National Institute of Standards and Technology's radio station WWVB. When I wear this watch, I can answer the question, "what time is it?".

Mud Resist

My newish G Shock, the Mudman. You know, I think the Mudman could keep working when the pocketmod became unusuable. I hope to never find out.

Shock Resist

A new G-Shock arrived this week. Although it's protecting the pocketmod, I daresay the pocketmod could almost outperform the G-Shock. Dropped 25 stories? Check. Survive a slapshot? Check. Water 200 m resist? Check. Well, maybe not if I use my inkjet.

Actually they make a pretty good team. Where one lags (timekeeping, alarm, electro luminescence backlight) the other one picks up (calanders, schedules, notes).

Thunderstorm

I thought I lost one. I misplaced the previous week's pocketmod and my final tally would be short by one.

Good news! I had only left it out in the back yard. I found it the day after a few thunderstorms rolled through town. It had obviously been soaked, but dried out in the next day's sun it was ready to go again. I hate to imagine what would have happened to an electronic PDA.

Hemp.

Picked up a pair of hemp cycling knickers from the good folks at bicycle fixation. Cut and styled for cycling, they do fine off the bike as well. Of course they have pockets which are handy for carrying my pocketmod.

Seersucker.

My seersucker shirts are not only fine for carrying my PocketMod and trusty Palomino pencil but a very good top for cycling in hot weather. In fact hot weather is where this fabric shines. The pucker in the fabric holds the shirt off of the skin and promotes airflow. And there is something to be said for not looking like a rolling billboard on the humble commute to work.

The end of March means one thing: Hockey

Two leagues, seven games in seven days, three last Saturday alone. Phew! Finished up one league last weekend with the Flyers. The Ducks finish this weekend. Short break then . . . Summer Hockey!

I'm sure these sorts of things have been around for awhile, but I sure was fascinated when I found out that if you printed things on the page just so you could fold them into a little book. I've also always had an interest in origami. Well, in the concept of origami. When things get tougher than a crane or balloon, well, that's when I just appreciate what the masters can do.

That's the thing about using pencils. They get used up. The short one pictured is just about the limit of comfortable writing. I'll find a jacket pocket for it to stay in so I always have one on hand. And in the mean time I get to get to work on a brand new Palimino.

Mod. PocketMod

Having recently seen Casino Royale and then reading the novel, how could I resist?

Sure there's a more obvious choice for a James Bond car that comes to mind. The Aston Martin DB 5. But the first time I saw the Toyota 2000 GT in You Only Live Twice it really stuck in my mind.

It wasn't until years later when discussing James Bond vehicles that I was able to track it down thanks to the internet. Thanks internet. Thanks wiki. Thanks for reading.

Where did you first hear about PocketMods? Me? Right up there in ReadyMade magazine. No, not that issue exactly, but an earlier one. Chock full of re-purposed, reused, and handbuilt goodness. A little too hip for me.

Week Four

More pencils.

I just keep pages six and seven blank for more notes and maybe even a drawing or two. But, I'm a lousy drawer so I don't.

What I have done this week is a comparison of three different pencils I have on hand. They all feel quite nice to write with, but I think my favourite is the middle one, The California Republic Palimino HB. It's the softest of the three and the line just seems to flow better than the others. But I'd feel fine using any one of them.

I like bikes.

I usually pick lined note pages for the fourth and fifth pages and invariably I find something bike related to note down. The Dance Life on MTV? My wife and kids are addicted to So You Think You Can Dance. When I saw a preview for the J-Lo show on MTV I thought they might like it. If I don't write it down, I'll forget.

The bike I'm working on these days is a Kogswell P/R.

Week two.

On pages two and three I like to have weekly calendars. I'm not much of a daytimer person nor are my days very busy, so a week per page is good enough for me. The second week on the adjacent page is good for keeping surprises to a minimum.
